CHAPTER FOURTEEN

KENZIE WOKE UP on Saturday morning to the soft familiar sound of her dad’s singing voice and smiled at his terrible pitch and bad rhythm. She turned to her side and took in the sight of Charlotte sleeping peacefully beside her before sneaking out of bed. On the way to her closet to fetch her slippers, she remembered.

Dr. Jacobs retrieved eight eggs, three of which were mature. She literally took hold of the wall to allow herself to fully process that thought again.

Three. Mature. Eggs. Three!

Kenzie grinned from ear to ear and slid on her slippers before shuffling downstairs to the kitchen. He stood at the stove, a head full of gray and a clean green golf shirt tucked nicely into his trousers. “Daddy!” she cried out with glee and hugged him from behind, using her whole wingspan to wrap around his upper body. It was obvious that Kenzie got her height from him.

“There’s my girl!” He patted her arms and then poured batter into another pan to start pancakes. “Still reveling in yesterday’s good news?”

“Yes!” Kenzie replied as she opened the fridge to grab the orange juice. “We’re one step closer.”

He reached for his mug on the island counter. “So, when do we hear about whether or not they can transfer on Monday?” he asked before sipping on his coffee.

Kenzie poured some orange juice in a glass and then closed the lid. “They said they would call today to let us know if an egg fertilized properly.”

Kenzie’s father shook his head. “Isn’t it amazing what they can do?”

“Truly,” Kenzie nodded in agreement, “Miraculous.”

He turned back to flip a pancake. “So, where’s little Charlotte?”

Kenzie hopped up on the barstool. “Snoozin’.”

“Any plans to start doing nights in her own room?” he asked with no touch of judgment, only curiosity.

“Nope,” Kenzie gave a carefree response and leaned back in her chair.

Her father turned around and smiled. “Good,” he said and winked at his daughter. “Your bond is special. Hold onto it for as long as you can.”

Kenzie returned a smile and took a sip of her juice. Ever since becoming a mom, her dad was nothing but supportive during every single decision, regardless of his own opinion. Kenzie loved him so much for that.

“So, are Brice and Natalie going to show up this morning?”

“I have no idea. I told them no pressure. Come whenever or not at all, if they don’t want to.”

“Well if not, you’re going to have leftovers for a week,” he chuckled and took another sip of coffee.

“Granddaddy!” Charlotte came running around the corner with her bed head curls flying in every direction.

“There’s my Honey Bug!” he turned around and scooped her up into his arms. “I’m making pancakes and eggs,” he said before kissing her on the cheek. He glanced over at Kenzie and then whispered in Charlotte’s ear, “I also brought you cinnamon rolls. Do you want one?”

Charlotte leaned in closer to her grandfather and whispered back excitedly, “Yes!”

Kenzie smiled and walked around the kitchen to grab herself some coffee.
